Volunteer Opportunties

Do you have a few hours to offer to our community?   A list of volunteer opportunities is listed below.  Please submit a Volunteer Interest Form to the Town Administrator.  Appointments will be made by the Board of Selectmen to these positions.

Animal Inspector -  Operates under MGL Chapter 129, this is a hands-off position which observes and reports instances such as quarantine protocols which are mandated by the state.  The Animal Control Officer is the hands-on position that physically catches and holding the animals (both domestic and wild).  Duties can be found at this link https://www.mass.gov/service-details/municipal-animal-inspector-qualifications-and-duties.   The Animal Inspector also handles barn inspections which are performed annually and designed to :  get a good census of domestic animal population in town, be sure that the animals appear in good health and free from disease and observe animal housing for ample food and water supply.  There is a small stipend for the Animal Inspector position.

Fence Viewer (3 Positions) - Fence viewers are local officials who administer fence laws.  They inspect new fences and work to settle disputes arising from trespass by livestock that have escaped enclosure.  They are also responsible for mediating fence-related disputes acting in accordance with MGL Chapter 49.

Northern Berkshire Cable Representative -  Serves as the Town representative to the Norther Berkshire Community Television Corporation which is a non-profit organization fund through franchise fees collected from the local cable provider.

Memorial Day Committee -  Serve as a member of the Town Memorial Day Committee working with volunteers to organize the Annual Memorial Day Parade.

Woodlands Partnership of Northwest Massachusetts -  Attend three Board meetings each year to represent the Town of Cheshire, serve on at least one standing committee as requested by the Chair, participate in the partnership events and meeting. Conservation Commission (Alternate) -  Serve as a Alternate member of the Conservation Commission which has the authority of several sources including the Conservation commission Act (MGL Chapter 40, Section 8C) for open space protection; the Wetland Protection Act (MGL Chapter 131, Section 40) for protecting wetlands and water ways; and the home rule provisions of the state constitution for non-zoning wetlands bylaws.

Farm Commission -  Serve as a member of the Farm/Agricultural Commission to promote and develop the agricultural resources of the Town.

Historical Commission (Alternate) -  MGL Chapter 40, Section 8D, the primary responsibility of the Historical Commission is community-wide historic preservation, the commission has only an advisory role within local government, they make recommendations to the Board of Selectmen on matters relating to preservation, protection and development of historic areas, buildings, structures and sites.
