Billing

Water billing is done through the Cheshire Water Department.  Water meters are read and billed tri-annually.

Payment

Payment for a water bill is due 30 days from the date of issue.  Failure to receive a bill does not relieve the owner of the obligation for timely payment or the consequences of non payment.  Please contact the Finance Office if you have not received a bill.  Payments may be made by cash or check at Town Offices located at 191 Church Street in the Finance Office and are considered made when received by the collector.  Payment by check should be mailed to the Town of Cheshire, Water Department, 191 Church Street, Cheshire MA  01225 or dropped off at the secure drop box at the entrance to Town Offices.   Soon water payments will be accepted online at www.cheshire-ma.gov

Penalites for Non-Payment

If the water bill is not paid within 30 days from the issue date interest will accrue at an annual rate of 18% from the day after the due date.  A demand for payment will be issued with a fee of $15.  Unpaid water bills will result in a Shut Off at which time turn off and turn on charges apply to accounts that have been discontinued for non-payment.

Abatements

You have the right to contest your bill.  To do so, you must file an application for abatement in writing on the approved form. The application can be dropped off in the Administrator Office or emailed to [email protected].  The filing deadline for abatements is thirty days after the date the bills were mailed (the due date).  The filing of the abatment does not stay the collection of your bill.  You must pay your bill by the due date.  A refund or credit to your account will be applied if the abatement is granted, you will be notified by the Water Commissioners of their final decision.  Abatement applciations are considered filed when received by the Water Operator.  If your application is not received by the application deadline, the Water Commissioners, cannot by law grant an abatement.
